前记:明天是中国教师节,特再推今年1月4日刊布的拙诗《种树的男人》之中英对照版(含原来的前记),致敬我深深景仰和缅怀的“种树的男人”杨善洲,和所有为中国教育事业苦其心志劳其筋骨的伟大“种树人”——国民教师!当初创作这首诗时,一方面固然为这位中国“种树的男人”的植树事迹所震撼,另一方面联想得特别多的也确乎是另一种意义上的“种树人”——教师,全诗字里行间多有隐喻,所以在年初发表的前记中我就写道:“作为一个老教师,窃以为天下所有为师者也未尝不可以从中寻获教益!”我要特别衷心地感谢我敬重的道友、著名英语教育家、北京外国语大学霍庆文教授的倾情举荐,尤其是著名英美文学研究专家、翻译家李正栓先生的精心翻译,他的译作令拙诗辉光顿生,神韵陡增,深信一定会受到爱好英语诗歌的读者激赏赞叹,我也祈愿通过正栓先生这首英译诗的传播,让英语世界了解熟悉伟大的“国民教师”杨善洲老人,毕竟,真正的好人是不分国界的!

种树的男人
——献给国民教师杨善洲

今天是众多国民可能十分陌生的一个人的生日。他叫杨善洲,云南保山市施甸县姚关镇人,曾任保山地区最高领导人,1988年退休后,放弃安享晚年,带领一帮人走进满眼荒芜的大亮山,以不可思议的顽强与睿智,克服种种艰难险阻,植树造林20余年,终于建成面积近6万亩、价值3亿元的林场(后以“善洲”命名),尔后又将林场经营管理权无偿捐赠给国家。所得20万奖金除4万留给一直独守农村的结发之妻张玉珍养老送终,其余悉数捐出。杨善洲因其平凡而卓越的贡献,曾获“2012年感动中国十大人物”等殊荣。去年2月25日,我在结束了保山施甸田园教育和学校管理专题报告的第二天,由教育局副局长杨永富诸君陪同,去善洲林场拜谒杨善洲墓。中国一个边陲的边陲,竟有如此伟大的“种树的男人”,能不感慨涕零乎?《种树的男人》(也译“植树的牧羊人”、“植树的男人”)是法国著名作家让·乔诺的作品,讲述了一个叫“布菲耶”的男人在一片荒蛮高地坚持数十年植树造林、缔造了普罗旺斯奇迹的故事,同名动画片曾获得第六十届奥斯卡最佳动画短篇奖、戛纳国际电影节金棕榈奖提名、世界动画大典大奖等。“布菲耶”其实是虚构的,而杨善洲则是“真人版”的中国“布菲耶”,其事迹也与《种树的男人》所述颇为相似。善洲林场虽无普罗旺斯景色迷人,驰名世界,但因为这里布满这位“种树的男人”的足迹,已然成为我心中的“普罗旺斯”。在拜谒参观的山道上,我承诺要写一首长诗,从一个新的视角诠释这位“种树的男人”,并于善洲先生诞辰日正式发布,以纪念这位中国国民的伟大教师。作为一个老教师,窃以为天下所有为师者也未尝不可以从中寻获教益!作诗过程时断时续,亦尝涕泗滂沱,个中滋味,无法言传,或恐要去诗外很远处寻觅、体味了!
The Man Who PlantedTrees
——Dedicated to Our National Teacher YangShanzhou

Today,it is the birthday of a person who may be unfamiliar to most people. He is YangShanzhou, a native of Yaoguan Town, Shidian County, Baoshan City of YunnanProvince. He used to be the top leader of Baoshan District. In 1988, when heretired, he gave up enjoying a life of ease in Kunming as arranged byprovincial leaders in his twilight years but leda group of people to the boundless barren Daliang Mountains where heplanted trees for over 20 years with incredible tenacity and sagacity, overcoming all kinds ofdifficulties and obstacles, and finally built up a forest with an area of 60000acres worth 300 million Yuan (The forest was later named "Shanzhou ForestFarm"). Later, he donated the business management right of the forest farmto our country without any compensation. He left only 40,000 Yuan out of the200,000 Yuan of bonuses to his wife Zhang Yuzhen for her elderly care, whospent all her life in the countryside. The rest of the bonuses were totallydenoted. Yang Shanzhou won the special honor as one of the "Ten KeyFigures Touching China in 2012" owing to his commonplace but excellentcontribution. Last year, on February 25, after I finished the special report onidyllic education and school management in Shidian County, Baoshan City,accompanied by Yang Yongfu, deputy director of Bureau of Education and others,I went to Shanzhou Forest Farm to pay homage to this man.On the frontier of the frontier, there has been such a great"Man Who Planted Trees"! How can we not be moved to tears? “The Man WhoPlanted Trees”(alsotranslated as "The Shepherd Who Planted Trees", or "TheMan Who Planted Trees"), is the representative work of Jean Giono, afamous French writer who told the story of a man called "Bouffier"who has persevered in planting trees for decades in a desolate highland andcreated the miracle of Provence. The cartoon of the same name once won the 60thOscar Award for Best Animated Short Film, was nominated for the Palme d'Orat Cannes International Film Festival and won theWorldAnimation Grand Ceremony and Award and the like. However, as a matter of fact, “Bouffier”is fictionalwhile Yang Shanzhou is a real-life Chinese "Bouffier". YangShanzhou’s story is quite similar to that of "The Man Who PlantedTrees". Though Shanzhou Forest Farm is not as charming and world-famous asProvence, it has become "Provence" in my heart because it was strewnwith footprints of "The Man who Planted Trees". On themountainous path of the visit, I promised to write a long poem tointerpret "The Man Who Planted Trees" from a new perspective andplanned to officially release it to commemorate this great Chinese nationalteacher on his birthday. As a veteran teacher, I have my personal belief thatall the teachers in the world can benefit a lot from this story! The process ofmy writing this poem is long as I did it at intermittence. And I was oftenmoved to torrents of tears. All sorts of feelings welling from my heart arebeyond deion or are only to be sought and experienced beyond poetry.

简注 Brief Notes:
①第1节。中国西南边陲有一传说,一位名叫“沙壶”的年轻女子独自划船至澜沧江打渔,巨浪湿身,因以致孕,生育十子。一日江中与苍龙相遇,九个儿子大惊逃逸,只有小儿子临危不惧,笑退苍龙,他就是苍龙之子,遂取名“九隆”。“九隆”成人后智勇双全,被推举为王,至哀牢一代,即以澜沧江为中心建立王国。后哀牢归汉,东汉设永昌郡,一时安居乐业。古哀牢及后来的永昌即今日之保山,杨善洲为保山姚关大柳水村人,一度任保山地区最高领导人。“黑蛮儿”是他出生后的取名。
The first stanza. There is a legend in the southwest frontier ofChina. A young girl named "Shahu" rowed alone to fish in LancangRiver. A huge wave drenched her and she was thereof pregnant and gave birth toten children. One day, when she came across the Gray Dragon, nine of her sonsfled helter-skelter. Only the youngest son faced the danger dauntlessly andfinally laughed away the Gray Dragon. He was the son of the Gray Dragon, hencecalled “Jiulong”. After he grew up, he was brave, resourceful and wasappointed as King of Ailao, a kingdom with Lancang River as its center. Later, Ailaosubmitted to the Han Dynasty; the Eastern Han Dynasty established Yongchang Countywhere people enjoyed temporary social harmony and stability. The ancient Ailaoand the subsequent Yongchang County became the present Baoshan City. YangShanzhou, a native of Daliushui Village of Yaoguan Town, was a former topleader of Baoshan District. “Heiman’er”was his nickname after his birth.
②第2节。“芊萰”(qiān liàn),草木青盛貌,义近“葱茏”,晋郭璞《江赋》有“涯灌芊萰,潜荟葱茏”句。
The second stanza. “芊萰”(qiānliàn) means lushness of vegetation, close to the meaning of “葱茏”(cōng lóng),namely,“verdancy”. Guo Pu, a famous scholar and man of letters in theEastern Jin Dynasty, wrote “Ode to Yangtse River”, which contains such asentence: “The bushes on river banks are lush; the weeds by the river areverdant. ”
③第3、4节。杨善洲童年时代和少年时代曾做过放牛娃和护林人,自小滋养深厚绵长的山林情结。
The third and the fourth stanza. Yang Shanzhou used to be a child cowherdand forest protector in his childhood and in his teens. So he bore a deep and lastingforest complex when he was very young.
④第5节。怒江为滇西高原河流,有“东方大峡谷”之谓,杨善洲选择植树造林的大亮山,即位于怒江东岸。
The fifth stanza. Nu Jiang is a river flowing through the WesternYunnan Plateau. It enjoys the fame as the "Grand Canyon of the East".Daliang Mountains which Yang Shanzhou chose to plant trees is just located onthe east bank of Nujiang River.
⑤第6节。“你宛如健硕而柔情的少妇/敞开巨乳 哺育幼苗 哺育鸟巢/哺育河流、扶桑和太阳”,暗含大母神之喻。大母神蕴含原始生育崇拜,并衍生大地、湖海、森林等意象。“大块噫气”,语出《庄子·齐物论》,意即大地吐气。块,土地;噫,吐气出声。“万窍翏翏宎宎,草木调调刁刁”,“翏翏”(liáo liáo,“翏”本作“飂”,陈鼓应《庄子今注今译》据《释文》注音,多读liù liù,恐不确)、“宎宎”(yǎoyǎo),均形容风声,“翏翏”是远远袭来的长风声,“宎宎”是风吹进树的孔穴发出的声音,语出《庄子·齐物论》:“夫大块噫气,其名为风。是唯无作,作则万窍怒呺。而独不闻之翏翏乎?“而独不见之调调之刁刁乎?”“扶桑”为传说中的神木名,也是日出的地方,《山海经·海外东经》:“汤谷上有扶桑,十日所浴。”《说文》云:“榑桑(按即扶桑),神木,日所出也。”埃及神话里太阳也是树神之子。
The sixth stanza. “You, like a robust and but tender young woman,/ With your huge breasts, / Nourish baby seedlings, / Feed a nest of birds, /And nurture rivers, holy mulberry trees and the sun.”hereis suggestive of the image of the Great Mother. The Great Mother contains theprimitive worship of birth and gives birth to images of the earth, seas andlakes, forests and the like. “大块噫气”,derived from On the Uniformity of All Things by Chuang Tzu, means thatthe Earth breathes. The Chinese character “块”(kuài)meansthe Earth ;“噫”(yī )means blowing out a vital breath with sound. In the line “万窍翏翏宎宎,草木调调刁刁”, theChinese character “翏”(liáo)is originallywritten as“飂”(liù),whileaccording to The Explanatory Article, the phonetic tranionsis“liùliù”in Contemporary Annotations and Translations of Chuang Tzu byChen Guying, which may not be correct.) “宎宎”(yǎoyǎo)isused to describe the sound of rustling wind.“翏翏”(liáo liáo) is the sound of howls sweeping from afar. “宎宎”is the sound of wind blowinginto an empty caves and hollows in trees. The verse above is derived from Onthe Uniformity of All Things by Chuang Tzu: “the Great Clod of the Earthbelches out a vital breath called the wind. / Sometimes it remains inactive,but once it becomes active, angry howls are emitted from ten thousand crevices./ Have you never heard them roaring?”“Have you never heard theswaying and waving of the trees and grass?”“扶桑”, (“holy mulberry tree) is a kind of holy tree in legend, also theplace where the sun rises. In the Book of Mountains and Seas: East:“Onthe edge of the sunny valley stands a holy mulberry tree, it is a place whereten suns bathe”and the Origin of Chinese Characters states that“榑桑(fúsāng )”, also interpreted as “扶桑”(fúsāng),a kind of holy tree,a place of sunrise.”In Egyptian mythology the sun is also a son of Tree Gods.
⑥第8节。“山鬼”,即山神,山林守护之神(从汪瑷、陆侃如、马茂元等说)。屈原著《山鬼》,为《九歌》之末篇,中有“乘赤豹兮从文狸,辛夷车兮结桂旗”句,后世画家绘山鬼图均伴有赤豹、文狸、木车、桂旗意象。但山鬼性别一直存有争议,宋元之前楚辞家多据《国语》《左传》所说,定山鬼为“木石之怪”,多视之为男性山怪,元明之后画家则多以山鬼为女性。“朝菌”是朝生暮死的菌类植物,“蟪蛄”,也即寒蝉,春生夏死或夏生秋死,二者均为生命极短促者,语出《庄子·逍遥游》:“朝菌不知晦朔,蟪蛄不知春秋。”“树干的年轮带着对水、土和你的生动记忆,滚滚转动/先通往青藏高原,再通往阿尔卑斯山脉和古特提斯海/最后轰轰烈烈,轰轰烈烈通往苍茫宇宙的尽头”,暗喻善洲精神不朽。保山河流属于怒江、澜沧江,源于青藏高原,均为国际河流,怒江最终注入印度洋安达曼海,澜沧江最终注入南海;保山地质构造属于阿尔卑斯槽皱带的横断山脉区,远古为浅水海域,为古特提斯海的一部分。
The eighth stanza. “Spirit of Mountains”, also called“Deityof Mountains”, the god protecting themountains and forests (in light of the definition of Wang Ai, Lu Kanru, Ma Maoyuanet al.). Mountain Spirit by Qu Yuan, the last chapter of Jiu Ge, contains the line “She rides a red leopard-striped lynxes following behind / Her chariot of magnolia arrayed with banners of cassia.”Thelater painters often painted Mountain Spirit with such images as red leopards,striped lynxes, magnolia chariots and cassia banners. However, the gender ofthe mountain spirit has been always controversial. Before the Song and YuanDynasties, most poets of Chu Ci defined the mountain spirit as“themonster of wood and stone, regarded as male monster in terms of The Commentary of Zuo in Guoyu. Afterthe Yuan and Ming Dynasties, painters regarded the mountain spirit as a female.“fungus”is akind of ephemeral fungus plants; “蟪蛄”is a cicada, which comes to being in spring and dies in autumn.
