As if you needed another reason to hate the gym, it now turns out that exercise can exhaust not only your muscles, but also your eyes. Fear not, however, for coffee can perk them right up again. During vigorousexercise, our muscles tire as they run out of fuel and build up waste products. Muscle performance can also be affected by aphenomenoncalled “central fatigue,” in which an imbalance in the body’s chemical messengers prevents the central nervous system from directing muscle movementseffectively. It was not known, however, whether central fatigue might also affect motor systems not directly involvedin the exercise itself—such as those that move the eyes. To find out, researchers gave 11 volunteers a carbohydrate solutioneither with a moderate dose of caffeine—which is known to stimulate the central nervous system—or as a placebo without, during 3 hours ofcycling. After exercising, the scientists tested the cyclists with eye-tracking cameras to see how well their brains could still controltheir visual system. The team found that exercise reduced the speed of rapid eye movements by about 8%, preventingtheir ability to capture new visual information. The caffeine—the equivalent of two strong cups of coffee—wassufficientto counteract this effect, with some cyclists even displayingincreasedeye movement speeds, the team reports today in Scientific Reports. So it might be a good idea to get someone else to drive you home after that marathon.

change over time. Hops, for example—which give many a modern brewski its bitter, citrusy flavor—are arelativelyrecent addition to the beverage, first mentioned in reference to brewing in the ninth century. Now, researchers have found a surprising ingredient in residue from 5000-year-old beer brewing equipment. While excavating two pits at a site in the central plains of China, scientists discovered potteryfragments from pots, funnels, amphorae, and stoves (stove fragment pictured). The different shapes of the containers suggest they were used to brew, filter, and store beer—they may be ancient “beer-making toolkits,” and the earliest directevidence of beer brewing in China, the researchers report online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. To test that hypothesis, the team examined the yellowish, dried remainsinside the vessels. About a third of the starch grains they found were pitted, swollen, folded, or distorted—types of mangling that can occur during the malting and mashing needed to make beer. The majority of the grains—about 80% were from cereal crops like millet and barley, and about 10% were bits of tubers, includingyam and lily, which would have sweetened the brew, the scientists say. Barley was an unexpected find: The crop was domesticated in western Eurasia and didn’t become a staplefood in central China until about 2000 years ago, according to the researchers. Based on that timing, they suggest barley may have arrivedin the region not as food, but as raw material for brewing beer.

范文

It is exciting to visit different places. As we travel, we will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region, meet and make friends with different people and get to know the custom of the local people. Today people are so fond of traveling that tourism has become one of the fastest growing industries in most countries.

The main reason why people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, having worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a weekend trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. For another example, spending an annual holiday traveling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not have much opportunity to go abroad. When people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder. Another reason is for learning. We may have read or heard about something but we can never get a deep understanding of it until we see it for ourselves.

In my opinion, the biggest advantage of traveling is we can learn much during our travel about the geography, biology, and history of the places we visit. Therefore, we’d better make use of every chance to travel so as to gain something meaningful.

With the development of the Internet and the popularization of computers, shopping on the Internet has become a commonplace in our life. Here consumers can buy almost everything they need.

Shopping on the Internet has a lot of advantages, of which the most important is perhaps its convenience. People don't have to waste a lot of their energy and precious time to go from one shop to another to choose the commodities they like. This is especially desirable to the old, the sick and the busy people who cannot go to the shops in person. All they need to do is to sit in front of their computers and click the mousses. The commodities they order will be delivered to them promptly.

Everything has two sides, shopping online is not the exception. Shopping on the Internet also has its disadvantages. The first disadvantage is that the consumers can't see the goods or try them on personally. The second disadvantage is that some shops on the Internet are not registered. They will never deliver anything to you after they get the money from you. Once cheated, you will find that you have nowhere to go to complain.

Nowadays, there has been a heated discussion as to the best choice in selecting the major. Views on the topic vary greatly among people from different walks of life. Some believe that it is a better choice to acquire knowledge in science, but others consider it better to dig into the humanities.

I totally agree with the former choice for the reasons presented below. Above all, it is good for the whole society because if more peoplein this society can choose to acquire scientific knowledge,it is more likely that the society will become better and better. Also, it is good for the person himself/herself. For example, it can help him/her become a person of practice rather than a person of words, which will make him/her a more usefulperson.

From my perspective, it is crucial that modern education should encourage people tobe practitioners rather than pedants. Also it is crucial that people should understand the meaning and value of scientific knowledge. Only in this way can we achieve greater success.

  范文:

Nowadays, there has been a heated discussion as to a better choice between attending college at home and abroad. Views on the topic vary greatly among people from different walks of life. Some believe that it is a better choice to study in domestic colleges, but others consider it better to study abroad.

I totally agree with the latter idea for the reasons presented below. To begin with, it harms the society in that the greater the competition is, the higher the recruitment requirements will become. Therefore, with experiences of studying abroad, graduates will become more competitive in job hunting. Furthermore, it is beneficial to the students themselves to study abroad. Without the choice to pursue overseas study, many great scholars today would never have achieved such great success.

From my perspective, it is crucial that the government should encourage people to pursue overseas study. Also it is crucial that people should understand the meaning and value of attending college abroad. Only in this way can we achieve greater success.

Views on the topic vary greatly among people from different walks of life. Some believe that it is a better choice to go to vocational school, but others consider it better to go to a university.

I totally disagree with the first idea for the reasons presented below. To begin with, it harms the society in that vocational schools often equip students with some skills for jobs and send them to the society way too early. There will be great competition in the job market. The greater the competition is, the higher the unemployment rate, and consequently the more unstable the society will become. Furthermore, it is harmful to the students themselves. Without the choice to pursue higher level of learning, many great scholars today would never have achieved such great success.

From my perspective, it is crucial that the government should encourage people to pursue higher and further study. Also it is high time that people understood the meaning and value of higher education. Only in this way can we achieve greater success.
